ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Federal investigators on Thursday released the final accident report on the Bering Air commuter plane crash last year that killed 10 people on Norton Sound sea ice, citing a combination of severe in-flight icing and a heavily overloaded aircraft as central to the tragedy. The National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) final report concludes a more than yearlong investigation into the Feb. 6, 2025, crash of the single-engine Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX, operating as Bering Air Flight 445. The flight departed Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. that day on a scheduled flight to Nome but lost radar contact just over 40 minutes later. Killed in the crash were the pilot, 34-year-old Chad Antill, and all nine passengers on board .

According to investigators, the aircraft flew into a localized band of severe freezing rain and freezing drizzle that quickly overwhelmed the airplane’s electronic TKS ice protection system.
