NTSB: Fatal Seldovia plane crash occurred during second attempt after hard landing
A small plane that crashed into a Kenai Peninsula slough last month was trying to climb back into the air after a jarring landing attempt, according to a preliminary report released this week by federal investigators. The Piper PA-24 carrying a pilot and three passengers was flying to Seldovia from Anchorage’s Merrill Field Airport on the afternoon of Aug. All four occupants died in the crash. The plane crashed into the Seldovia Slough after striking a tree as it tried to gain altitude to attempt another landing, lead National Transportation Safety Board investigator Mark Ward wrote in the report. As the plane approached the airport, a witness reported hearing the aircraft “appear to be coming in fast,” Ward wrote.
