WOODBURY COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has reported its preliminary investigation of a fatal airplane crash that happened on July 24, 2026. The airplane, a Zenith Zodiac 601HDS experimental airplane, N27601, was making a trip from Wisconsin to Colorado when it crashed near Sioux City, Iowa, just before 2:30 p.m. The pilot was killed as a result of the crash. Authorities said that Dennis Elkins, 64, of Erie, Colorado, was the pilot of the small aircraft. The NTSB said the plane had recently left the Pocahontas Municipal Airport before it crashed.
