Ohio cyclosporiasis outbreak has peaked; national outbreak declared over

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The state’s outbreak of the gastrointestinal illness cyclosporiasis appears to be slowing down after peaking a few months ago, and the federal government declared Friday that the national outbreak has ended. It was the largest-ever outbreak of cyclosporiasis in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. In Ohio, cases of the parasitic intestinal illness stayed steady at 6,412 last week and this week, state health officials said Friday. Ohio’s case count stood at 6,341 in late August. In the city of Cleveland, the number of weekly cyclosporiasis cases has dropped from its peak of about 140 in early July, to fewer than 20 in mid-August.
