LIHUE, Hawaii (Island News) -- Days after Hurricane Lowell’s impacts on Kauai , the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced on Thursday that ongoing security screening wait times at Lihue Airport (LIH) stemmed from power outages earlier in the week. In an update to travelers, HDOT said Lihue Airport has been running on backup generators since Hurricane Lowell knocked out the island’s power on Tuesday, Sept. The storm also left one of the airport’s two backup generators damaged. To minimize the load on the single generator in use, security screening at the airport was reduced to one line, resulting in extended screening times. Power drops are still occurring from time to time even with the backup generator.
