Pedestrian killed crossing against light in N.J. city, driver returned to approach police

A pedestrian crossing a street Thursday night in Union County was struck and killed by a vehicle that had the right of way, authorities said. The pedestrian, who was not identified, was crossing Spring Street at Bond Street in Elizabeth when the crash occurred around 9 p.m. “The driver was traveling southbound on Spring Street with the green light,” a city spokeswoman said. The pedestrian was crossing eastward against the light when the driver struck them. The crash initially appeared to be a hit-and-run, but the driver pulled over several blocks away on East Grand Street and approached police officers, the spokeswoman said. The pedestrian was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
