Peruvian candidate killed at campaign event

Susy Aponte, a journalist and candidate for regional governor of northern Peru’s Áncash, was shot and killed while talking to reporters at a campaign event. A police officer was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with an armed man outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, as worshippers gathered to mark Yom Kippur. Authorities have not said what led to the shooting. France’s wine regulators have loosened rules around champagne after a series of heat waves struck this summer.
