Possible plane crash reported in Colorado mountains, sheriff says

Colorado search and rescue crews are responding to an apparent plane crash on the side of a mountain near Telluride, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday evening. Sheriff’s deputies, search crews, Telluride Fire and the Bureau of Land Management were called out for a plume of smoke coming from the north side of Dolores Peak, about 15 miles southwest of Telluride, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. The smoke is “believed to be caused by a downed single-engine aircraft,” agency officials said just before 5:30 p.m. Denver air traffic controllers contacted San Miguel County emergency dispatch about a missing airplane minutes after the smoke was first reported, said Susan Lilly, public information officer with the sheriff’s office. Officials have not confirmed that the missing plane is the source of the smoke, and crews are still working to get to the remote area to confirm the crash and whether anyone was injured, Lilly said.
