Powerful magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes offshore of southwest Alaska along the Pacific Ring of Fire

NIKOLSKI, Alaska – A strong magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck near a remote stretch of the Aleutian Islands early Monday morning, along the volatile stretch of the Pacific Ring of Fire. OVER A DOZEN EARTHQUAKES RATTLE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE OVER LAST 24 HOURS IN LATEST BURST OF SEISMIC ACTIVITY The U.S. Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck at 5:19 a.m. local time, about 101 miles west-southwest of Nikolski, Alaska, at a depth of about 71 miles. So far, the USGS has noted that only three individuals reported feeling the faint shaking, which could be largely due to the depth of the quake along with the remoteness of the location. Typically, deeper depths mean the seismic energy weakens significantly by the time it travels up to the surface, resulting in much less intense shaking on land.
