Richmond officer shot during welfare check; woman arrested after hourslong standoff and lockdown: police

RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) -- A Richmond police officer is in stable condition after being shot while responding to a welfare check Thursday night, and a female suspect was later taken into custody after a standoff, authorities said. The shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. at a home on Key Boulevard between MacDonald and Humboldt avenues. According to authorities, Contra Costa County's behavioral health crisis response team requested assistance from police. The incident triggered a heavy police presence in the area, prompting an hourslong lockdown. Richmond Police Chief Tim Simmons described the shooting during an overnight briefing. "When the first officer arrived on scene to the residence, the officer was almost immediately struck by gunfire," Simmons said. "The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
