A woman shot a Richmond police officer who was responding to a mental health incident Thursday evening, authorities said, marking the second shooting of a law enforcement officer in Contra Costa County within hours. The officer, a 20-year veteran of the police department, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition and is expected to survive. Before the woman was taken into custody, Therriault said she briefly tried to “sprint and run away.” “I’m extremely grateful that our officer is expected to survive and that no resident, no community member or no assisting personnel were injured in this unfortunate incident,” the chief said Thursday. “Given the number of rounds fired, this incident could have ended with many additional injuries or several losses of life.” Police have not released the woman’s identity or any charges she could face related to the incident.
