Runway safety system absent in Miami plane crash already in place in Venice

SARASOTA, Fla. ( WWSB ) - The deadly Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport is putting a renewed focus on runway safety. One system designed to help stop an aircraft after a runway overrun is already in place at Venice Municipal Airport. Venice is one of six airports in Florida with an Engineered Material Arresting System, or EMAS, at the end of at least one runway. EMAS is made up of lightweight, crushable material. If an aircraft overruns the runway its landing gear sinks into the material, creating resistance designed to rapidly slow the aircraft.
