San Antonio stabbing highlights safety concerns for homeless community

A recent stabbing involving a man experiencing homelessness is highlighting the safety challenges people living unsheltered can face in San Antonio. The San Antonio Police Department said the 35-year-old man was stabbed multiple times Wednesday near Jackson Keller Road and Vance Jackson Road. The stabbing is also raising questions about how people living on the streets can protect themselves when they may not have a secure place to sleep or escape from danger. Terri Behling, director of communications and government relations for Haven for Hope, told KSAT people experiencing homelessness can be especially vulnerable because of the uncertainty surrounding where they sleep. “It’s unnerving to fall asleep in an uncertain area or an area you’re not familiar with,” Behling said. “So I know that’s why a lot of people tend to group together and sort of watch out for one another. But it does make them a very vulnerable population.” Behling said violence is one of several safety concerns for people living unsheltered.
