San Diego City College examining whether earthquake fault poses problem for replacing Saville Theater

San Diego City College is taking a look at whether it is safe to tear down and replace Saville Theater after engineers discovered subsurface strands of an earthquake fault near the 57-year-old facility, which is near 15th and C streets. “The strands did not appear to have had any sign of seismic activity going way back in time,” said Joel Peterson, executive operations officer at the San Diego Community College District. “But we want to see if any of the strands go beneath the theater.” The issue was recently discovered during a standard construction review at Saville, the college’s main performing arts center. Engineers will soon dig boreholes to explore the structure of the rocks and soil under the complex. The building replacement project will cost about $66 million.
