San Fernando police shoot, kill man accused of attacking woman with shovel

A deadly officer-involved shooting in San Fernando is now under investigation. It was reported in the 200 block of North Maclay Avenue around 11:45 p.m. The San Fernando Police Department did not have many details surrounding the incident right away; however, they were able to confirm that an officer-involved shooting took place. Speaking to KTLA's Erin Myers, an SFPD official later confirmed that officers were dispatched to the area on an assault with a deadly weapon call regarding a man with a shovel said to be attacking someone. The victim was believed to be a woman who may have been in her car at the time.

A witness told KTLA that he heard "maybe 10 to 15 shots" while at a nearby brewery. "I came outside and saw a bunch of law enforcement officers performing CPR with a suspect on the floor," said the witness, who wanted to remain anonymous. "It's scary because the city of San Fernando is really quiet, really peaceful." Authorities said that the person was pronounced dead despite life-saving measures performed by first responders. "First and foremost, a human life was lost today," interim San Fernando Police Department Chief Anthony Miranda said Tuesday morning. "No matter the circumstances, any loss of life is a profound tragedy and deeply impacts a family, loved ones and the city of San Fernando." The area around Maclay and 3rd Street remained closed as of 7 a.m.
