Snake-like robots from Pa. university deployed in Venezuela earthquake response

Researchers from a Pennsylvania university rushed to Venezuela with snake-like robots to assist international teams searching collapsed buildings after two massive earthquakes killed more than 5,000 people in late June. The specialized robots , developed at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science Robotics Institute , slithered into tight spaces unreachable by human responders and transmitted camera footage from inside the rubble. The deployment marked a real-world test of technology researchers hope can improve disaster response and save lives. Two earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on June 24, injuring about 16,800 people and leaving nearly 18,000 homeless, according to recent reports.
