Suspect in woman’s shooting, later shot by Greensboro police dies

Greensboro police said a suspect who was shot by police and who fired his gun at officers after shooting a woman Sunday has since died. Police said the suspect, Richard Bernard Hovis, 44, died overnight from his injuries. The Greensboro Police Department shared more details about the investigation that closed several streets in downtown Sunday afternoon. Police Chief Kamran Afzal confirmed that five officers were involved in the shooting with Richard Bernard Hovis, who they said was armed at the time and shot at officers. Chief Afzal said the following details are based on body-camera footage he's reviewed from those officers.

Afzal said at some point, the suspect falls, possibly from shots fired by the officer. "The individual the suspect went down, but kept shooting at the officer," said Afzal. "Additional officers arrived at the scene after a few minutes; the individual was taken into custody and was handcuffed, and a handgun was recovered from the suspect." He said the woman who was shot was taken to a local hospital and remains in critical but stable condition at this time.
