Texas grandfather, grandson killed in train-vehicle crash near Plattsmouth

CASS COUNTY, Neb. (WOWT) - A grandfather and his grandson, both from Texas, were killed in a crash with a train Thursday morning in rural Cass County, southwest of Plattsmouth. Cass County Sheriff’s Capt. Reid Richter told First Alert 6 that when deputies arrived, they found an SUV had collided with the train and two people in the vehicle were deceased. CCSO later confirmed that Vernon Hays, 73, and Gabriel Johnson, 22, both of Kingsland, Texas, had been pronounced dead at the scene. The crash near the intersection of 12th Street and Church Road was reported at 5:59 a.m. — an hour before sunrise — was at a rail crossing for Union Pacific Railroad.
