TRACKING LOWELL | Hurricane Lowell maintains Category 4 strength, tracks toward Western Hawaiian Islands

HONOLULU (Island News) -- Lowell, a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to pass near Western Hawaiian Islands early next week. Hurricane Lowell is now about 590 miles south of Lihue, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, making it a Category 4 hurricane. It remains a strong storm and is expected to stay at/near major hurricane strength as it approaches the Islands. No major track changes with latest update. Lowell is moving west at about 9 mph, but a shift is expected this weekend as a disturbance north of the islands weakens the ridge that has been guiding the hurricane.
