Uncle charged after toddler dies in Columbia shooting, police say

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A child died Thursday after a shooting in Columbia, with their uncle now facing charges. Authorities said Erin Meyers, 3, died after being shot inside a home on Bailey Street, part of The Colony apartment complex. The Columbia Police Department said Friday that Meyers’ uncle, 21-year-old Tyrone Thompson Jr., is charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon in connection with the incident. CPD Deputy Chief Melron Kelly said a shots fired call came in at around 5:40 p.m. A crowd was later seen outside the apartments trying to process what had happened. “Richland County deputies responded to the scene,” Kelly said. “Once arrived on scene, they found a toddler that had been struck by gunfire.” Meyers was initially listed in critical condition and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
