In all four of Vermont’s boys soccer divisions the Herculean feat of pulling off an upset over perennial powerhouses can feel like hoisting the World Cup trophy. During the past two –plus years the Green Mountain State became famous for producing the 2024 NCAA Division I champion UVM Catamounts in men’s soccer and two-time reigning champ Vermont Green FC men in the USL League 2. With all 272 towns from a total of 14 counties accounting for the nation’s second-smallest population, there’s no doubt that almost every Vermonter loves – and typically identifies as — an underdog. Johnsbury got a taste of that sweet sensation of accomplishing the unthinkable Monday by downing 21-time Division I champ CVU. And two days later there weren’t many fans atop Gallison Hill in East Montpelier who could deny that U-32 was the better team when the Raiders beat D-II juggernaut Montpelier for the first time in eight years.
