Utah gun safety group urges secure storage after Sandy child’s accidental shooting death

SANDY, Utah (KUTV) — Following the death of a 5-year-old in what Sandy Police described as an accidental shooting involving young children, a Utah gun-safety organization is urging families to make sure firearms are secured where children cannot access them. Terri Gilfillan, outreach coordinator for the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah and project director for GunSafe Families, said the organization has tracked accidental shootings in Utah since 2016. “We have seen that this is becoming kind of an issue for young children getting access to firearms,” Gilfillan said. “It’s a big concern for our organization.” MORE: 5-year-old dies at hospital after accidental shooting in Sandy GunSafe Families encourages firearm owners to store guns in a way that prevents children from getting to them, while still allowing adults to access them when needed.
