Investigators say, shortly after 8 p.m., Mario Saldivar-Romaro of Rockingham, Va. failed to yield to traffic when he got on I-81 southbound and crossed two lanes, striking a tractor trailer. The tractor trailer veered over the median and into the path of a northbound truck carrying oxygen tanks. The collision caused the oxygen tanks to explode, damaging multiple vehicles in the area, including a Frederick County Sheriff’s Department vehicle and a civilian vehicle in a parking lot east of the Interstate.

The driver who allegedly slammed into the tractor trailer after declining to yield to traffic, Mario Saldivar-Romaro of Rockingham, Va., was not injured. He was charged with reckless driving, and additional charges are pending consultation with the Frederick County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, according to State Police. The crash investigation closed down the interstate for several hours overnight.
