SLED is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 40-year-old man dead Wednesday after an encounter with deputies that began in Florence County and ended in Williamsburg County. According to SLED, deputies with the Florence County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a vehicle and serve an arrest warrant on a wanted suspect along Lake City Highway near Johnsville. The suspect, identified as Nelson Boyd Chavis, 40, fled, prompting a pursuit, authorities said. Chavis crossed from Florence County into Williamsburg County, investigators said, before abandoning his vehicle and running into the woods near Muddy Creek Road. An exchange of gunfire then occurred between Chavis, who was armed with a handgun, and deputies.
