Washington Supreme Court rules natural gas initiative is unconstitutional

I-2066 required utilities to provide natural gas service to any person or business that requests it. It also barred the Washington Utility and Trade Commission from approving multiyear rate plans that require or incentivize the termination of natural gas service. The Washington state Supreme Court upheld Thursday a King County Superior Court ruling , finding on narrower grounds that the initiative only violated the single-subject requirement of the Washington state Constitution. “Because the provisions that introduce distinct subjects are not severable, I-2066 is unconstitutional in its entirety,” the ruling said.
