'We were ready': SPD claims mayor's staff delayed updates during Bite of Seattle shooting

SEATTLE — A review of the Bite of Seattle festival mass shooting shows police officers took a shooter into custody in less than half a minute, but it took much longer for the public to get official information because of apparent delays brought on by the Mayor's Office to Seattle police. In an update to the Seattle City Council's public safety committee, Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis and Interim Chief Andre Sayles walked through an after-action review of the Bite of Seattle shooting. Davis, who was the acting chief at the time of the shooting, revealed new details about the hours-long delay in releasing information to the public about the shooting. Staff of Mayor Katie Wilson had blamed SPD for the delay in public updates, but Davis said Deputy Mayor Brian Surratt told him to not conduct any press briefings until the Mayor was on site.

Four others were wounded, with three taken to Harborview and one walking into UW Medical Center-Montlake. The 11:00 p.m. briefing was also the first time police said the Seattle Center campus was safe. "I will tell you this right now, what I shared in the 20-minute press conference at 11:00 p.m. would have been the same exact information I would have provided at 7:30 - nothing changed," Davis said. "That’s how stable the situation was.
