West Genesee Gold boys golf prevails in ‘dogfight’ to avenge lone loss against F-M Green

When West Genesee Gold suffered its only loss of the season in early September against Fayetteville-Manlius Green, it came at the Hornets’ home course at Green Lakes Golf Course. So, when West Genesee had the chance to host F-M at Pine Grove Health and Country Club, the Wildcats entered Wednesday’s matchup with one thought: “even the score.” West Genesee played some of its best golf of the year to edge the Hornets, 180-184, returning the favor on its home links. “I knew that was going to be tight,” West Genesee Gold coach Tom Cole said. “It really was right down to the last fourth or fifth group of golfers coming in. You know, it was a couple stroke match the entire time.” Despite relatively gusty winds, both teams put together some of their most well-rounded scores of the year. Every golfer in the match shot in the 30s, giving each squad their season’s second-best score. West Genesee’s senior core propelled the way for the Wildcats, but they seemingly couldn’t shake the Hornets even with solid rounds from Frankie Barbuto (37) and Topher Shoults (35). It took until one of West Genesee’s golfers in the “mid-to-later” groups, senior Lincoln Christopher , wrapped up with a one-under-par score of 34. The medalist pushed the Wildcats over the edge. “(Lincoln’s) score that came in kind of just solidified the victory by a few strokes,” Cole said.
