West Springfield field hockey keeps winning streak alive, rolls past Palmer

WILLIAMSTOWN - Monument Mountain boys soccer earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Mount Greylock Saturday afternoon in a game where every possession and defensive stop mattered. Despite the low-scoring final, both teams played with plenty of intensity, battling for loose balls and putting their bodies on the line throughout the match. Strong defensive play on both sides kept scoring opportunities limited, but a penalty kick for Monument put them ahead in the end. As the game began, Monument took no time going on the offensive. Attempting to score in just the first few minutes, Mount Greylock’s Charlie Bayliss put a stop to the run. He was a key member of the squad Saturday, staying in midfield to defend and control the offense. This gave Mount Greylock the chance to go on a run of its own, lining up a shot at goal for a chance to take an early lead. Luckily for Monument, they had goalie Xavier Hernandez on their side. Stopping the shot and secured one of the many saves he’d have in the game. Hernandez recorded three saves Saturday with his clean sheet, proving to be a threat on the field. “The game was pretty intense; a lot of communication was needed. There was some minor miscommunication at the start, but we locked them down and were able to pull out the win,” said Hernandez. “Today was about keeping our cool, and keeping our heads throughout the game.”
