CHICAGO — Big Ten coaches, including Oregon’s Dan Lanning, spoke enthusiastically about the NCAA’s new five-year eligibility rule during Big Ten Media Days this week at the Hilton Chicago. The rule, adopted in June, gives athletes five seasons to compete in five years, eliminating the former guideline that gave athletes five years to compete in four seasons. That rule was further complicated in 2018 when the NCAA allowed first-year students to redshirt while competing in four games without burning a year of eligibility. The new rule allows coaches to provide valuable game experience to developing players while not worrying about preserving a redshirt year.
