Thousands of people have been infected and two have died in Michigan as a result of a parasitic infection occurring across multiple US states. Cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite. Its main symptom is frequent, watery and explosive diarrhoea. People can become infected by consuming affected food or water. Forty-five US states had reported cases by late July, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with Michigan among the hardest-hit.
