Woman badly injured in e-bike crash with vehicle in Oneida County

Utica, N.Y. — A woman was badly injured in a crash involving an electric bike and a vehicle Wednesday afternoon in Oneida County. Around 1:40 p.m., Utica police and fire crews were dispatched to the intersection of Oneida and Hobart streets for a serious crash involving an e-bike and a motor vehicle, according to Utica Police Lt. Michael Curley. A vehicle was traveling south on Oneida Street through the intersection when a woman riding an e-bike west on Hobart Street entered the intersection and struck the vehicle, Curley said. The impact ejected the woman from the e-bike, causing her to land in the road. Firefighters transported the woman to Wynn Hospital, where she is listed in critical but stable condition, Curley said. The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be that the e-bike operator failed to stop at a traffic light at the intersection, Curley said, but the investigation is continuing. No tickets have been issued at this time pending the investigation. This is the third crash involving an e-bike or dirt bike in the area in the last several weeks and the second serious crash at the same intersection, Curley said. Police remind the public that some e-bikes can reach speeds of up to 40 mph and an impact at that speed can result in serious injury or death, Curley said.
